CAS100C

The popularity of Titanic

1. Introduction:

a. Attention Getter: On April 10, 1912, one of the most luxurious ships Titanic took her place in history during her maiden voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to New York, when she struck an iceberg on April 14, 1912 and fully sank on the morning of April 15, 1912. Estimates vary, but approximately 1,520 people perished in the sinking which ranks as one of the worst peacetime maritime disasters in history.

b. Credibility: Based on this historically influential disaster, Hollywood famous director James Cameron made the real film Titanic. And Titanic is my favorite movie because of its prevailing influence, grand casting and appealing plot, scenery.

c. Thesis: As one of the most successful love stories in movie history, Titanic showed unusual popularity all over the world.

d. Preview of main points:

1. Exigence: The romantic love story, the powerful production, the fascinating scenery of the ship and the unforgettable experience of this legendary event made this film one of the most impressive and greatest movies in the past century.

2. Audience: This movie was directed at romantic teenagers or for those couples who are deeply falling in love.

3. Constraints: Producing this movie is not easy, directors have lots of historic facts need to discover and the movie needs to base on true facts.

Transition to body: There will be more secrets and mysterious if I analyze those factors into deeper that I listed previously.

2. Body:

a. Exigence:

1. According to interview with James Cameron, he expressed interest in the famous sinking of the ship Titanic. He decided to script and film his next project based on this event.

2. The topic is comparatively attractive at that period (year 1997). Topic: The movie revolved around a fictional romance story between two young lovers from different social classes who meet onboard the ship's maiden, and final, voyage.

3. Reminding people to remember the past about this unforgettable disaster -the Titanic was the ship of legend and even before the legend, it was a builder's dream and the pride of Belfast.

4. Showing people’s basic instinct while they are in danger and educating people about the meaning of sacrifice between lovers, families and strangers while they are all facing the threat of death.

5. Exhibiting the artistic symbolization throughout the movie by viewing the images and the style of the scenery on the ship and showing the activities that people attended on the ship.

6. Giving audiences an impressive impression after seeing the movie that will make this movie inevitably become one of the greatest movies in the past century.

7. Financially, this movie had a huge box office and earned a lot of money. According to the Internet movie database, Titanic received an amount of $28,638,131 at the opening weekend in December 21, 1997 in US.

Transition: Since this magnificent movie was produced, and it attracted millions of audiences, what kind of audience will be mostly interested in it?

B. Audience:

1. Obviously it is welcomed by those romantic teenagers. ( Baidu Online survey: 89% teenagers love this movie)

2. It was also loved by those married couples. (User ratings over 10 million on Imdb.com)

3. It is a good movie for a man to pursue or propose a woman, in other words, it is the best dating movie.

4. People who are enthusiasm in art should be fond of this movie because this movie exhibited lots of artistic scenery or images. (Drawings, paintings, music, artifacts…)

5. Of course there is a minority of singles or old people will watch this movie, and they all have a nice evaluation about the movie.

6. According to New York Times, there are some survivors from the real event who saw the film with lots of comments and sighs with emotions. -“It all happened just like yesterday”, said by Wilson, Luke.

Transition: This movie obtained huge success, but are there any limitations or difficulties while producing the movie? Yes there are.

C. Constraints:

1. Limits: Since lots of people know the history and the ending of the Titanic, the director will not be able to make a happy ending; he had to let the ship sink instead of letting the ship arrived at the destination.

Opportunities: So the director need not to produce the part that how people arrived at NY and how the couple ended at destination or their future.

2. Limits: Though the movie covered mostly of what happened, but there are still some parts that are still unknown and remain discovering which is impossible to be shown in the movie.

Opportunities: The director did not need to shoot this part because of its unknown history.

3. Limits: Before producing the movie, James Cameron did not have a high budget on this movie by thinking not to do it too risky, which lessens those high-techs’ scenery.

Opportunities: Since it already had obtained great success, it is okay skip some high-techs’ scenery by putting on those funds into other realms.

4. Limits: During editing the movie, producers and historians suffered a lot of difficulties: diving under the sea 12 times, meeting hurricanes… So there are still lots of things they ought to find out but can not be explored.

Opportunities: Eventually the movie was finished “safely” and if they find out more means they have to put more spirit and time into it, but by looking at the success today, all those things that people may think it is necessary to put into the film sounds unnecessary.

Transition from Body: Well, that’s mainly all the mysterious and secrets of Titanic.

3. Conclusion:

A. Review of main points:

1. Exigence: By watching the movie, you will find out true love between people while they are facing in danger and you will comprehend your basic instinct when death is approaching between you and other people beside you.

2. Audience: This movie is a masterpiece for friends who become lovers and lovers who become couples.

3. Constrains: By overcoming those difficulties and limitations to the story’s plot, the discovering of history, a masterpiece has finally come to earth.

B. Restate Thesis: Magnificent production, legendary story and impressive history made this film one of the most successful movies in film history and that is mainly why it showed a great deal of popularity all over the world.

C. Decisive End: As everyone knows, Titanic’s thematic song is “my heart will go on”. I believe the influence of Titanic will follow the song and will be going on forever.

Comments from Classmates:

Liza McKenna: I think you did a good job today your topic was good and definately relevant for the class because just above everyone raised their hands having seen the movie. One thing I did notice is that you folded your arms for a while at one point which is something she said to try and avoid so you don't seem closed up to the audience. I thought your closing line or so was really good though, it really left the audience with something to remember.

Nicole Ritschel: I really liked your topic, (I LOVE the Titanic.) You did a really good job in your audience section, you had some really great ideas with that. Your transition were always really spot on. Make sure for next time that you dont rock back and forth, and watch your arms. Overall, great job!

Tim Neubert: I think your speech went really well. Personally, I don't like the Titanic, there I said it. I thought you really emphasized your main points which made your speech easier to follow.

Scot Brown: I understand that you like Titanic, but I remember that this is a class about rhetorical criticism. Your speech, while good, sounded more like a sales pitch at some parts. It would have helped if you had something critical (it doesn't have to be negative, but constructive criticism would help) to say about the film and your understanding of it, and how that applies to the rest of us.

Christina G: I like how you did a topic we can all relate to because just about all of us have seen Titanic. I thought you had pretty good facts to back up your statements. One thing I did notice is you tended to say the word "well" alot as a filler throughout your speech so maybe you can work on fixing that for the next speech.

Joe D:

-need a better attention getter

-didn't feel that your survey of who has seen the movie benefitted or was incorporated well into your speech

-at one point you were sequentially listing reasons for making the movie; I felt that this dried the flavor of the speech and made it less fluent

-try to vary your dialect moreso; at one point I started to count how many times you said the word "masterpeice" rather than concentrating on the message of your speech

From Chris Shin

It was really interesting topic since most of student saw the Titanic. And the support information is quite credible. Little problem about eye contact amount and variety, but overall, good.

Ryan Wendt:

Overall, I liked your speech, but as others have said, your body language did make you seem closed off. You had a good amount of information about Titanic though, which was nice to hear.

Speech 2

CAS100C

The meaning of Titanic

1.Introduction:

a. Attention Getter: “Winning that ticket, Rose, was the best thing that ever happened to me…it brought me to you. And I am thankful for that. Rose, I am thankful. You must do me this honor, Rose. Promise me you’ll survive”. “There was a man named Jack Dawson and that he saved me… in every way that a person can be saved. I do not even have a picture of him. He exists now only in my memory.” The movie Titanic was based on these two simple pledges which were moving and impressive. Indeed, Titanic was so significant that it left a lot of “treasures” for us to aftertaste.

b. Credibility: The “treasures” that Titanic left to us is happened and experienced on every one of us. We enjoyed, we suffered from all these treasures and I believe everyone is interested in discovering all these precious. Those precious are-the meaning of love, the sacrifice of people and the diversity of different social classes.

c. Thesis Statement: There is no doubt that Titanic is successful. Many people contribute to its success includes the powerful production, grand casting and beautiful images. In my point of view, Titanic is successful not only because of these three factors, but the movie showed other spiritual and splendid aspects that encouraged and excited people about the meaning of love, life and family.

d. Preview of main points:

1. Love: The whole movie revolved around a frictional romance story between two young lovers from different social classes who meet onboard the ship’s maiden and final voyage.

2. People: The entire movie typically sculptured people’s activities during leisure times and their actions while the disaster came. People are the key elements that bring the movie into a higher stage.

3. Classes: The movie showed the difference between classes from the beginning to the end which is another view of the film.

Transition to body: The whole movie was surrounded with romantic love and love was the most attractive part of the film.

2. Body:

Main Points 1: Although there are remote distances between Jack and Rose, they finally fell in love and left a romantic story behind.

A. Love does not deal with money.

1. Rose did not like her rich fiancée; instead she fell in love with Jack. As we all know, Jack is a third-class, poor passenger and Rose is a first-class, noble passenger.

2. During the movie, Rose escaped from the first-class banquet and joined the third-class dancing party with Jack.

B. True love can be experienced and tested from the trial of survival and death.

1. At the beginning of the film, Jack persuaded Rose not to dive into the sea and pulled Rose back from the brim of death.

2. In the end, Rose escaped from the lifeboat and chose to struggle with Jack at the edge of death. Live or Die, he says. Rose chooses to die with Jack instead of living without him.

C.Love will not disappear or fade, no matter how many years pass, true love will last forever.

1. After the successful survive by another boat, Rose sheltered on the other boat safely and when someone asked her name, she did not forget Jack for his sacrifice and she gave the person her full name by putting Jack’s name into it.

2. The whole movie was based on the old Rose’s memory, she have lived a whole life without forgetting Jack. Even after she married someone else; Jack still lived in her heart, forever.

Transition: Love is the most influential theme of the movie, but not the only impressive we can get from the movie, people is another point we should focus.

Main Points 2: Besides love, the movie also shows emotional relationship when people are in danger and lets people know more about human’s basic skills and the meaning of sacrifice while dealing with the threat of death. When death approaches, different people choose to do different things.

A. The first group of people was a third-class family which consists of a mother with two children.

1. A mother was telling a story to bring their children to pleasant dreams; finally they were all buried at the bottom of the sea. They did not escape because there were not enough lifeboats.

B. The second group of people was an old couple.

1. They hugged together closely on the bed while the ship was sinking and they died so closely and intimately. They did not escape because they are hopeless by figuring their age. They do not want to struggle their life in this way at this age. So they choose the most comfortable way to end their life.

C. The third group of people was the staffs on the ship.

1. The captain killed himself by standing there and drowning by the sea. He sacrificed himself to leave more room for other refugees.

2. The designer of the ship chose to wait to die on the ship because he regretted that he did not build a strong ship for the travelers.

“I’m sorry I did not build you a stronger ship.”-Thomas Andrews.

Transition: Eventually only like 100 people survived from the catastrophe, mostly are nobles and women. We can see that during that period, noble’s lives were more precious than the poor’s.

Main Points 3: The movie apparently showed the difference between different stages of people which mainly focus on the noble and the poor.

A. The difference between Jack and Rose (nobles and poor) was obvious.

1. The room Jack lived was crowed and dirty.

2. The room Rose lived was luxurious, wide and grand.

3. Jack was too poor to eat enough food and wear enough clothes, so he had to steal it.

4. On the contrary, Rose had pretty clothes to wear and the food she ate everyday was expensive and delicious.

B. The different entertainment places and activities between nobles and poor were also apparent.

1. The nobles sat together drinking alcohol, smoking cigar.

2. The poor had nothing to smoke or drink.

3. The nobles attended the banquet are private, quiet and splendid. For example, the royal family sat together and had their meals in a large and grand lobby.

4. The poor could only stay together and joined those noisy parties which were messy, crowed and the room was limited.

5. During leisure times: The nobles would go to the concert or an art exhibition.

6. The poor would gather together chatting or sketching some pictures.

C. The diverse treatment between nobles and poor while both of them were in danger (the boat was about to sink) was the most unfair aspect shown in the movie.

1. The nobles were allowed to get on the lifeboats first.

2. The poor had to wait for the remaining space. For example: The poor were locked outside the door while the nobles were boarding on the lifeboats.

3. When the nobles and the poor both stand in line for the reaming lifeboats, the crew will make sure the nobles got on first, no poor could get ahead, otherwise the poor would be shot. For example: The crew shot a poor for his rush on the lifeboats.

4. Even the poor was on the lifeboat, the nobles could expelled him off the boat and took his place because he paid money to the staff.

Transition from Body: Well, that’s mainly my feelings towards Titanic which showed a big deal of treasures to us from our personality to our daily life.

3. Conclusion:

A. Review of main points:

1. Love: The movie is a moving love story ended with tears, thoughts and reflections.

2. People: People is the element of each movie, but in Titanic people have shown an essential factor by showing what they did when disaster came and educated us about the meaning of sacrifice.

3. Classes: The gap of classes reflected the life in the past and it brings us the memories of the old times.

B. Restate thesis: A successful movie needs should be about life, love, class, also it needs vital meaning for us to memorize, to aftertaste.

C. Decisive End: Although Titanic had already sunken into the sea for nearly a century, the story, the meaning of Titanic will long live on this world and will be always remembered.

Comments from Classmates:

Joe D: The introduction was weak; I felt like you just went right into the body of the speech. Reading from your outline distanced yourself from the audience and made for poor eye contact. Speech speed as well needs improvement, you were talking VERY fast to point that at times your dialect could not be understood. The amount of plot summary within your speech made the ideas that you to get across hard to follow. Overall good speech and nice job.

Mike Chiang: I liked the pace of your speech. However, the structure of your speech was not very defined, I was not able to clearly tell what all your main points were. I liked your visual aid, but remember to take the pictures off when you are done talking about them (add blank slides). Try looking up more often.

Jess Mannion: You showed improvement in projection of this speech compared to the last. You also incorporated your visual aid into your presentation nicely. The points you made in your speech could have been more concise, they were somewhat broad and ambiguous. Some of your main points seemed to fall into the vague categories of the last speech. Try "dissecting" these points to work on uncovering more conclusive interpretations of the movie. Also your eye contact could use improvement, it seemed like you were relying heavily on your notes throughout.

Nicole: Quan, I loved the visual! The pictures were beautiful! (especially Leonardo Decaprio) But, make sure you take it off the screen so we focus on you too! You seemed more comfortable the second time around, and your eye contact has gotten better. Make sure you work on the structure fo your speech, sometimes I was lost on what point you were on. Overall, bang up job! You are improving! =)

Scot Brown: Not to sound like a broken record or anything, but I don't know what I was supposed to get out of this speech other than that Titanic was a great movie. You talk about the details of the film and time period to some extent, but draw no relation to today and current social and economic issues. Which is essential if we are to actually learn anything from this film. You also need to work on posture and body position. Overall, with any film like this, you should focus on its place as a cultural artifact, situated in the time it was produced. Then understand the view of history it is trying to represent, and the film maker's intentions. What accounted for its astounding success (besides the claim that it was just a great film)?

Liz Peters: I thought you gave a good speech. You looked love, life, and family which you felt were important to get out of the content of the movie, which is exactly what the second speech project said to do. You need to work on eye contact and use of visual aid. You were talking to the aid instead of the audience. Overall I liked your speech, just try to connect with the audience more.
